A genuinely free Canva alternative

Canva is the best-known design tool on the web, and deservedly so — but its free tier sits inside a product built to sell you Pro: premium templates, premium assets, formats that unlock when you pay. If all you need is a poster, a social post or a thumbnail, that upsell gets old fast.

Graphtr is a free Canva alternative for exactly those everyday jobs. Free means free: no premium tier exists, no export carries a watermark, and you never create an account — your designs are saved privately in your own browser. It won't do everything Canva does (more on that below, honestly), but what it does, it does without an asterisk.

Graphtr vs typical freemium design tools

An honest side-by-side. “Typical freemium tools” describes the common pattern across design apps with free tiers and paid upgrades — specifics vary by product and plan.

What Graphtr doesn't do (yet)

An alternative is only useful if you know what you're trading away. Graphtr is a young, focused tool, and there are things Canva and other large design suites offer that Graphtr simply doesn't have today:

  • Video editing or animation
  • AI image generation
  • Brand kits
  • Team collaboration
  • A built-in stock-photo library
  • Mobile apps

If your work depends on any of those, a bigger suite is the right call. If you mostly make static graphics and you're tired of paywalls, Graphtr covers the essentials — templates, text with effects, shapes, charts, your own image uploads, layers — and every one of them is free.

Frequently asked questions

Is Graphtr really free, or is there a catch?+

Graphtr is completely free. There is no premium tier, no trial that expires, no watermark on exports and no export format locked behind a paywall. Every template is free and fully editable, and PNG, JPG, SVG and print-ready PDF export all cost nothing.

Do I need to create an account to use Graphtr?+

No. Graphtr has no sign-up at all. Your designs are saved automatically in your own browser using IndexedDB, so you can close the tab and pick up where you left off on the same device. The trade-off is that designs don't sync between devices, and clearing your browser data removes them — export anything you want to keep.

Can Graphtr fully replace Canva?+

For simple static graphics — social posts, posters, thumbnails, invitations, cards — yes. Canva is a much larger product with paid tiers, and it offers things Graphtr doesn't: video, animation, AI image generation, brand kits, team collaboration, a stock-photo library and mobile apps. If you need those, Canva or a similar tool is the better fit. If you just need a clean graphic without a paywall, Graphtr does the job.

What file formats can I export from Graphtr?+

PNG (including transparent backgrounds), JPG, SVG and PDF — all free. Charts and shapes export as true vectors in SVG, and the PDF export is print-ready, so a poster or card designed in Graphtr can go straight to a print shop.

Are my designs private?+

Yes, by architecture rather than by policy. Graphtr never uploads your designs or images to a server — everything is stored locally in your browser. There is no account and no cloud copy, so nobody at Graphtr can see what you make.
